Bernard Whitman, Democratic strategist and pollster, argues that the Republican effort to cut earmarks is nothing more than a way to sidestep questions on the programs they will cut to reduce the deficit. With earmarks totaling only about one-half of 1% of the $3.5 trillion 2010 federal budget, the Republicans need to get serious about making good on their promise to cut spending. If the Republicans want to balance the budget by 2020, while protecting defense spending, Medicare and the Bush Tax Cuts for the wealthy, then they would have to eliminate the entire rest of the Federal Government. Now that the Republicans are in control of the House, it is time that they actually propose what programs they are going to cut other than $16 billion in earmarks. www.whitmanstrategies.com
